Profile – Intraoperative radiation therapy More Information
This term refers to a radiation therapy system for treating tumours during the operation. The minute dimensions of the radiation source enable it to be precisely positioned on the tumour. This procedure causes less discomfort to the patient and enables direct irradiation of any tumour cells which may remain in the tissue following surgery.

The system is mainly used to treat breast cancer and brain tumours. It has been certified in Europe, Asia and the USA. However, verification of the longterm success of the treatment method is still outstanding. This is currently being investigated in clinical studies.
